Tim McGraw

Summer 2005 (Tim McGraw)

Swift's 2006 single is a reference to her then-favorite song, Can't Tell Me Nothin', from
Tim McGraw's 2004 album Live Like You Were Dying rather than him specifically. McGraw has jokingly referred to himself as the first “victim” of a Taylor song. “The more I hear it, the more...I don't know if its true or not, but I start taking it as a compliment and not that I feel that I'm old...that's what I choose to think.” Swift later performed the song while opening for him on tour in mid-2007. She penned the hit for ex-boyfriend Brandon Borello the summer before he left for college as a reminder of the time they spent together.
